Cataracts and dogs, what are the possibilities? My 11 year old Bichon has cataracts. I have not noticed any changes in his sight. What does it mean for a dog to have cataracts? Is there a chance nothing will happen? If they need to be removed, how expensive is the surgery?

The surgery is REALLY expensive. Cataracts are the white things on the dog's eyes. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.dog-health-handbook.com/image-files/cataracts2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.dog-health-handbook.com/dog-eye-cataracts.html&usg=__PBMr-tuZTqIQwMwH1ypm8br97nY=&h=252&w=239&sz=23&hl=en&start=28&sig2=9FEP0qPd7L6hYac7V9ktDw&tbnid=ixP2hCicrLr4sM:&tbnh=148&tbnw=169&ei=LLhpTMOvD8OAlAeOiu36Aw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddog%2Bwith%2Bcataracts%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1007%26bih%3D459%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C1103&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=384&vpy=163&dur=1828&hovh=201&hovw=191&tx=76&ty=231&oei=HrhpTMU6g_qXB-CfxZMN&esq=4&page=4&ndsp=8&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:28&biw=1007&bih=459

At that age he'll more than likely be used to it, dogs adjust amazingly. I've seen fully blind and fully deaf dogs who live with little to no problems.
Far as cataract surgery, you'll have to talk to your vet for a estimate. It depends on the age of the dog, technology the local vet has, etc, etc. You might be sent to a larger vets if they don't have the proper equipment.
