can an optometrist take care of cataracts or do they need surgery by an ophthalmologist?i'm not thrilled about surgery of any kind AND can one go blind if cataracts are NOT operated on ?
also, if surgery is done, does one need the very thick glasses or for that matter, any glasses after surgery other than reading glasses already worn.

Over time, cataracts worsen. Untreated, they can make a person's vision almost nil.

An opthamologist is a surgeon that operates on the eye. He/she would be the person to discuss your concerns with,

the only cure for cataracts is surgery.
in the surgery they will remove the old cloudy lens and put in a new artificial lens. as long as your eye structure can support the new lens (which nearly everyone's does) then there will be no need for thick coke bottle glasses and as long as the prescription in the implanted lens is correct (which nearly everyone's is) there will be no need for any glasses. in fact you most likely won't even need the reading glasses cuz your sight will be much more clear.

if you don't have surgery the cataract will just get worse and worse and it will become harder and harder to see.

cataract surgery is performed all the time and its really not that big of a deal.
it usually only takes about 15-20 minutes. in most cases you are awake for the surgery and they just numb your eye. some people are nervous and get meds to relax them. and in some cases people get put to sleep for the surgery.

please have the surgery you'll be able to see much better and your life will be better.
