How long is pink eye contagious after starting antibiotics?Yesterday morning my 1 year old son woke up with pink eye in one eye. The doctor gave some eye drops & I started them yesterday afternoon. This morning he woke up with both eyes infected now. How long will he be contagious now that he is on antibiotic drops? And now that it has spread to his other eye, does that mean that (the time for it to not be contagious anymore) starts over? I have a 2 year old daughter & I don't want her to get it too!

I was just to the Dr. with my daughter for pink eye. She told me that after 24hrs of drops it wasn't contagious anymore. I would start the 24 hrs from the second eye, not the first. Unfortunately, your daughter may have already come in contact with it before you noticed it in your son. Time will only tell if she gets it or not. Just use good hand washing--for everyone--you don't want it either! Hope this helps!

Around Thanksgiving my son (1 at the time) had pink eye. I believe its 24 hours after you start the drops but I just waited until he was finished with the drops before I took him out just to be sure. My older son was around his brother all day every day and he never got it. Have your daughter washer her hands a lot.

I agree with the frist 2 posts, though many schools will not allow the child to return until the eye is no longer oozing. Try to keep the kids from touching their eyes, wash hands often and wash those pillowcases daily.

24 hours from the start of the medication and your child can go back to school, etc.
Usually, with a kid you should just do both eyes even though one may not show symptoms, as they almost always rub them and infect the other. Also wash his bed sheets, and wash his hands alot.
