Does my hamster have an eye infection?I recently took a two week vacation and left the hamsters in my parents care. I came home today to find one of my hamsters has a thumb-print-size scab/black protruding skin near his eye. It looks more like a scab but I can't be sure. I asked my parents what happened and they told me that they held him less than a week ago and nothing seemed wrong. Could he have done this to himself because of an itchy eye infection? If so, any home-remedies?

You should take him to the vet to make sure it doesn't get worse.

Could he have gotten in a fight with the other hamster? It's hard to fix these kind of things yourself because the hamster is so small. If looks like the hamster's eye is pinkish, I would take him to a vet. If it's scabbing over and heals in a week or so, you should be fine. If it gets worse, take him to a vet.

Regardless of what is wrong with your hamster they are to small and too delicate to use pet shop or home remedies on. He clearly has an eye infection and may be in some discomfort. Only a qualified vet can diagnose and give correct treatment, so make an appointment today. Good luck, Im sure he will be ok.

Take him to a vet. It could be an infection, cyst or tumor. Most rodents were used as lab animals to find cures for tumors. From labs they found their way into to pet market. So they are still prone to getting tumors and cysts. If your hamster is a Syrian it may be Cushing's Syndrome. Here's a page with info on that: http://purplekatkritters.tripod.com/syrian/cushings.html
