What really is glaucoma? All I know about glaucoma is that it is a disease concerning the eye and its nerves. Can you tell me more about it? Also, when surgery is done to treat glaucoma, is the patient awake? I'm not sure seeing as the eye(s) would have to be open to do it. Thanks!

There are different types of glaucoma but the commonest type is when the pressure in the eye is higher than normal and causes damage to the optic nerve. This causes loss of the field of vision and if left untreated, gradually leads to "tunnel vision".
It is usually successfuly treated with eye drops. If the pressure is still high despite using all types of drops, then surgery might be needed. There is a video of the operation.
