The connection is color. Apparently glaucous originally meant silvery, grey, or bluish-green. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/glaucous?qsrc=2446 Glaucoma originally referred to a silvery opaque eye lens http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/glaucoma Glaucus gulls are silvery grey on their backs and wings. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/glaucous+gull?qsrc=2446
